La Boite presents ‘As You Like It’

It’s the start of an exciting new partnership between La Boite Theatre and Bossy Hair! We are the official stylists for the cast of all La Boite productions, and to kick things off for 2012 La Boite Theatre returns this February with Shakespeares classic, As You Like It. The season is running from the 18th of February to the 24th of March, and to celebrate Bossy Hair is giving away a double pass. The pass can be used at any point during the season (bar opening night).

Not familiar with the play? Here’s a quick rundown from the La Boîte Theatre website.

Rosalind falls in love with the younger Orlando at a wrestling match, as you do. Banished from the city by her usurping uncle, she disguises herself as a man, as you would.

With her best friend Celia at her side, she seeks refuge in the magical Forest of Arden where she meets Orlando again and teaches him the art of love, just as she likes it.

Shakespeare’s most joyous comedy is a feast of wit and wisdom, love and lust, cross-dressing and cross-purposes. This is a life-affirming, wonderfully optimistic trip into the forest of love performed by a crack cast for your special beguilement.

I know Helen Howard will delight and inspire as Rosalind, Shakespeare’s greatest female creation, and I could think of no better Orlando than Thom, who gave us such a scintillating Mark Antony in Julius Caesar - what a gorgeous pairing. how to: D&G’s bouncy blow wave

Something caught our attention aside from the gorgeous, brightly coloured collection at D&G’s farewell show in Milan recently. The hair. Beautiful, free flowing yet perfectly arranged blow waves. And while many would assume a blow wave is a simple task, anyone who has had a salon blow wave will know the difference between a good one and a great one. The team at fashionising.com have put together the perfect guide for how to get it right.

Redken’s Creative Consultant, Guido, says, “This style looks effortless but does require a few steps to make sure the hair flows on the runway”.

If you want to look runway-ready even while doing your daily chores (who wouldn’t?), follow the steps below.

1. Towel-dry your hair and apply any variety of blow-dry enhancing cream to the roots. The product will create texture and hold. Guido used Redken’s Velvet Gelatine 07 to create the D&G look.

2. Section the hair and blow-dry using a round brush. Brush away from the roots to create volume.

3. Once the hair is dry, make a centre-part and brush the hair out. This will give the bounce and fullness to the locks.4. If you want fuller, longer-lasting waves, leave the hair to set in a few large rollers. Backstage at D&G, models’ hair was set with several rollers while they waited for the show to go on. Be sure to roll the hair in the direction you want it to sit (in this case, roll the hair under), with the hair separated into a top, middle and bottom section.

5. Spray hairspray on a paddle hairbrush and gently comb away from the parting in the direction of the hair. This will settle the visible flyaway strands around the crown. Remember never to directly spray hairspray on the hair for this look.Not sure how to wear it?The short answer is to wear it with anything. From work wear to a countryside holiday or even a red-carpet event (if those are part of your lifestyle), this laid-back blow wave hairstyle compliments almost everything. But it’s not just the wardrobe, wear this hair down look with metallic-smoky eyes, a bright lipstick or even a nude-dewy face, it’s adaptable in its entirety.

we love lana

While most YouTube sensations are memorable for reasons other than the talent of their subjects (e.g. Antoine Dodson), every now and then we come across one that’s worth a second viewing. And then a third. And then a share on your Facebook wall. And maybe even a like…you get the idea.

The latest to emerge from this category is the enchanting Lana Del Rey. If you don’t recognise that name, get familiar with it as you will probably be hearing it a lot this year. In August 2011 she uploaded her first single ‘Video Games‘ onto YouTube. A mere few million views later, and she’s since released her second single ‘Born to Die‘ with her album of the same name due for release at the end of January. She even managed to snag the Next Big Thing award at the 2011 Q Awards – not bad for an artist who hasn’t even released their first album yet.

Often described as a ‘gangster Nancy Sinatra’, her nostalgic old Hollywood style and haunting, saultry vocals make this American sweetheart a force to be reckoned with. But it’s not just her vocal talent that has us bewitched – it’s the 1950′s inspired styling that has caught out eye too, so we thought we would share a few shots out of admiration.

stylist spotlight: sarah kelly

Sarah started with Bossy six months ago as the Head Trainer for the the Kelvin Grove Academy. Before Bossy, she was a full time stylist and assistant manager for Toni & Guy. Her role sees her guiding the students through their apprenticeships, teaching them the tricks of the trade and helping them with their own personal development before becoming full time seniors stylists themselves!

What first drew you to hairdressing?
Well I’ve always been a bit creative, and more of a practical type of person. That, and I’m a hard worker so all three combined lead me to it I guess!

What inspires you?
I look to fashion and art mostly. Then there’s just everyday people as well. Where we’re located, in Kelvin Grove, there are a lot of creative types around, so it’s not hard to spot someone with a quirky individual style. The students inspire me as well, as they offer fresh perspective.

What’s your highlight of 2011 with Bossy?
Getting this job! I have been wanting to move into a teaching role for a while, to experience something new and a bit different. So definitely watching the students grow, knowing that I’ve had input to their development and seeing them achieve some amazing results. It’s been incredibly rewarding!

What’s your passion outside of hairdressing?
Modern art.

Who is your style icon?
A bit of everyone , really. If I had to pick one, Marilyn Monroe. And if I could chose a brand, I’d say Chanel – classic, strong.

Who would you trade hair with for a day?
BI’d love to try an afro, so I’ll say Beyonce!

Trends you’re seeing this summer?
The big one this summer is balayage.

Your favourite product?
The Volupt Spray from Sebastian, because it really helps you style the hair nicely without weighing it down and is great for getting shape with your blow-dry.

Best hair care tip?
Regular cuts!

Favourite spot in Brisbane?
The London Cafe in Teneriffe. It’s great for breakfast, or a casual drink – it’s in a cute quiet little area, and I just catch the ferry across the river.

You may remember a post a while back showcasing the work of our very own Rebecca Carpenter, which was featured in Vogue Italia. Well, things haven’t slowed down for Rebecca. Here are a few shots from a recent shoot where she lent her styling expertise to Frock Paper Scissors, the student run initiative of the QUT fashion department featuring the beautiful Antonia, who also happened to be our model for the 2011 Wella Trend Vision competition. These stunning shots were also featured in the Brisbane Times. Congratulations Rebecca! Gorgeous work.

On Monday the 5th of October, the courtyard of the Kelvin Grove Urban Village will be transformed to showcase the creative work of our Academy students, collaborating with the future forces of fashion from QUT’s elite, award winning fashion department.

All proceeds from the night will go to the Leukaemia Foundation and aid them in the development of the Boggo Road Urban Village – a complex dedicated to families of patients going through treatment.

We took 10 minutes with the vibrant Schae from Bossy’s Aspley Salon. Here’s what she had to say.

What is your position at Bossy?
I’m a second year apprentice. I started with Bossy nearly two years ago.

What made you want to become a hairdresser?
I’ve always wanted to be a hairdresser since I was a kid, so I guess you could say I’m following my childhood dream.

What do you love about working for Bossy?
The team – everyone’s awesome, we all get along really well and I just love the way Bossy runs. Especially the great events we get to be involved with, like So You Think You Can Colour, photo shoots etc.

What has been your highlight of 2011?
I’ve really loved a lot of the colour work I’ve been doing in salon, and assisting with styling on photo shoots in the past has been really fun too.

What inspires your creativity?
I’d say myself! I change my hair almost daily. And I guess I look to other people as well.

Outside of hairdressing, what are you passionate about?
Playing XBOX. I love COD!

Last album you bought?
Ministry of Sound, love the Calvin Harris track.

Who is your style icon?
Lady GaGa. I think I’m quite similar to her – she’s a bit weird, I’m a bit weird! We both reinvent our style.

If you could swap hair with anyone just for a day to try out a style, who would it be?
Probably Rhianna, when she shaved half her head. I’d love to try that, but I’d never shave my head. I think that would be pretty cool to try out.

Favourite product?
Whipped Creme, by Sebastian Professional. It’s soft on the hair and it smells amazing. It puts moisture back into the hair and is a really good styling product for blow-drying,

Best hair care tip?
Always use a heat protector when you’re blow-drying or straightening your hair.
